Frailty Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)
🏥 Overview
Frailty SDEC is the RAEI’s Same Day Emergency Care service for patients over 65 years old. The team assesses, diagnoses and treats with the aim of discharging the patient on the same day.
📥 Referral Sources
Frailty SDEC accepts referrals from:

✅ General Inclusion Criteria
Prerequisites
All patients must have an ECG completed and reviewed by a clinician before referral.
Age-Based Criteria
| Age | Criteria |
|---|---|
| 65+ | 1 or more frailty syndromes |
| 75+ | Reduced mobility in last 3 months OR takes 6+ medications |
| 85+ | Automatically screen in (including those with dementia or nursing home residents) |
Frailty Syndromes
- Delirium
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Falls
- Collapse
- Advance Care Planning
- Immobility
- Incontinence
- All presentations from care home residents
❌ Exclusion Criteria
Patients with these conditions should NOT be referred to Frailty SDEC:

| Mental Health | Acute mental health requiring 1-1 care |
| Respiratory | Oxygen requirements (discuss with nurse in charge/ACP) |
| Cardiac | Arrhythmia |
| Neurological | Head injuries with altered neurology, Acute stroke, Seizures |
| GI | GI bleed |
| Trauma | Fractures without Orthopaedic/ED plan |
| Overdose | All overdoses |
| Infection Risk | COVID positive, loose stools |
| Wounds | New open wounds without initial management in ED |
